Club Profile

Eurostar

The Scottish Aero Club (SAC) is Scotland’s original and largest flying club.  We are the only such organization to attract members from all parts of Scotland - as well as from other parts of the UK and overseas.  We have three key objectives:

  • To encourage and support Sport and Recreational aviation.
  • To minimize the costs of Sport and Recreational aviation.
  • To attract and retain members.

We were established in 1927 as the Scottish Flying Club and began life near the current site of Glasgow’s International Airport.  In 1956 we merged with the Strathtay Flying Club, relocated to Perth Airport and became the Scottish Aero Club.  We are proud to be the only entity in continuous operation at Perth Airport ever since.

Today’s SAC is a vibrant organisation with over 260 active members.  We have five distinct membership categories.  This means we have the right membership type - and budget - for all aviation enthusiasts: Pilots, Students, Affiliates, Associates and Juniors.  We operate the largest general aviation hangar in Scotland for the benefit of our members and visiting pilots.  We offer reasonable rates and provide year-round hangarage for more than 60 aircraft of all types and sizes.

Perth Airport is the premier general aviation aerodrome in Scotland.  Located centrally between Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Glasgow, it boasts three runways: two tarmac and one grass.  This means there are very few times when wind direction prevents flying.  And Perth is the only Scottish airport to conduct all types of flight training:  Aeroplane, Helicopter, Microlight and Gyrocopter.   Highly competitive rate packages are available for both private and commercial training programs.

The SAC is also home to the Strathtay Strut of the LAA (Light Aircraft Association), and we serve as the Scottish Office of UK AOPA (Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association).

During the summer we host numerous fly-ins and fly-outs (both UK and abroad) - plus a number of social, charity and community events.  During autumn and winter evenings we provide a wide range of aviation-related lectures and events.   A notable recent visitor was Alvin Drew, NASA astronaut.

Our members extend a warm welcome to prospective and new members as well as to the public and visiting pilots and their families and friends.   There is an inexpensive hotel and an economically priced restaurant just steps from our spacious and well-appointed clubhouse facilities - where coffee and snacks are also available.
